  • Urological procedures

Preparing for Surgery

Required documentation to bring to pre-surgery appointment and/or surgery day:

  • Current legal picture ID
  • Social Security card
  • Insurance policy cards / insurance authorization or claims forms
  • Any paperwork your Surgeon or Primary Care Physician has given you
  • A copy of your Advance Directives or Living Will; or any necessary guardianship or Power of Attorney Documentation
  • A list of ALL prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking along with doses and frequency

The Do's and Don'ts Related to Surgery


  • Do bathe / shower & brush your teeth day of surgery (DO NOT swallow the water)
  • Do wear loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Do arrange for transportation home! If you are scheduled to receive anesthesia, you MUST arrange for a responsible adult (18 years of age or older) to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours. (Taxi’s or other methods of public transportation including “medical transportation” are NOT permitted-unless accompanied by a responsible adult)
  • Do bring a case to put your glasses, dentures, and/or hearing aides in during surgery
  • Do bring any durable medical equipment (i.e., crutches, slings, immobilizers, etc.) the day of surgery
  • Do bring your inhalers with you the day of surgery if you have asthma
  • Do bring your CPAP machine with you in a bag if you have sleep apnea
  • Do notify your surgeon if there are ANY medical changes after scheduling your surgery (fever, cough, cold, etc.)

Do Nots

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight (NO gum, water, ice, food, or liquid, etc.) **unless specific instructions are given otherwise**
  • Do not drink any alcohol 24 hours prior to and 24 hours after your surgery
  • Do not wear any make-up, contact lenses, or hair accessories
  • Do not bring jewelry, valuables, purse, wallet, etc. (bring ID, insurance card, and any financial responsibilities, if necessary)

Pre-Anesthesia Information

Be Prepared to give a thorough medical history

  1. All medications that are taken on a routine or as needed basis, including vitamins, supplements, herbs, prescribed meds, etc. (the dose and frequency will be required)
  2. VERY IMPORTANT: if any form of a blood thinner is taken (Coumadin, Plavix, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Vitamin E, Omega 3, 6, and 9, Fish Oil, Lovaza)
    • The prescribing Physician must provide the patient and North Cypress Medical Center instructions in writing regarding stopping any of the blood thinners
  3. Cardiac History - Inform the Nurse if:
    • you have had chest pain related to “acid reflux,” “stress,” etc.
    • you have an irregular heart beat
    • you have palpitations
    • when you had your last EKG (ordering Dr and/or hospital where test was completed)
    • you have had a stress test (ordering Dr and/or hospital where test was completed)
    • you have had a heart monitor (ordering Dr and/or hospital where placed)
    • you have had a heart attack (when)
    • you have any heart stents (surgeon and/or hospital where placed)
    • you have a pacemaker (we will want to make a copy of the card that states the type of pacemaker and brand – bring with you to hospital)
    • you have had a heart ablation (when and where was the procedure done)
    • Any heart surgeries (when and where)

If any of the above is pertinent history of the patients, a cardiac clearance may be necessary.
